This is an excellent talk that explains in detail the importance of choosing a madhhab, and why it is a prerequisite for the correct practice of the Islamic traditions. |
In this thought provoking session, Hamza Yusuf and Imam Zaid Shakir discuss the current conflict between the West and Islam. They reflect upon the abandoned understanding that every person’s life is sacred, and that no one has the right to take another’s life. In insightful speeches, both Yusuf and Shakir bring questions to the stage that each one of us much seriously ponder if we are to find a means to live harmoniously as people of different faiths in the modern, global world, so that we may ensure a peaceful destiny for our children. |

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) repeated three times, “The one who has no love has no faith,” and he commanded Muslims to spread peace. Addressing an audience of Muslims and people of other faiths, Hamza Yusuf speaks about the problems of warfare, explaining that war is a capitulation to the worst aspects of humanity. It is human nature to forgive and resolve conflicts; “Humans are very adept if they choose to do that, but it’s a conscious choice, and it takes courage and effort,” Yusuf said. This talk is vital for people of all faiths who wish to work towards peace and face the challenge of opposing warfare. |
At the 2000 Summer Rihla Program in southern Spain, Hamza Yusuf introduced the text: The Poor Man's Book of Assistance, by the ninth century Moroccan scholar, Sidi Ahmed Zarruq, to an eager group of students at the Al-Azzargra Madrassa. The extemporary commentary given by Shaykh Hamza is full of insights and wisdoms that will no doubt leave a mark on the listener's heart -- the mark of desiring spiritual growth and purification. One student explained that Sidi Ahmed Zarruq "advises you step by step on how to purify the sick heart just as a doctor would advise her ill patient. He provides you with a specific plan to follow on your jouney in attempting to attain your only station for salvation -- that of a sound heart. " She also said, "Shaykh Hamza's dynamic teaching style really brings this book to life, extrapolating practical applications for the student of the here and now." |
In the Spring 2008 issue of Seasons, the journal of Zaytuna Institute, Hamza Yusuf provides an analysis about the legal definition of kufr, or disbelief, in the Muslim tradition; Umar F. Abd-Allah articulates how Islam's five core legal maxims are especially relevant to Muslims living in the West; Mohammad H. Fadel addresses the challenges that the modern human rights movement poses to Islamic thought; and Zaid Shakir argues that Muslim societies are concurrently patriarchal and matriarchal. |

Purification of the Heart, as its title states, is a course on the vessel of human spirituality, character, and morality -- the heart. The suffering and problems that we confront in our lives on a personal and even global level actually come down to the condition of the heart. Muslim scholars throughout history have written extensively on this topic, as prompted by the well-known statements of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and verses of the Quran. In essence, Purification of the Heart is a course on the "Greater Jihad" -- as it has been called by illustrious learned men and women of Islamic civilization -- our struggle to become better human beings, luminaries of faith and morality. |
This is a new and complete translation of the Qur’an—the Islamic scripture—by one of the premier translators of religious texts in the world. The meanings of this sacred text are rendered into the English language with subtle touches of poetry and crisp prose, allowing the reader an opportunity to understand not only the evident meaning of the Qur’an but something of the soul and spirit it evokes. This direct and timely rendition is an essential source for the modern reader. Thomas Cleary – Holding a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University, he is the translator of over fifty volumes of Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian, and Islamic texts from Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, Pali and Arabic- including the best-selling Art of War. |
A completely revised second edition of a very popular volume. Key to the Garden is an elaborate exposition of the Prophet Muhammad’s teaching that the inner life must pass through three stages: affirmation of faith with the tongue, then the mind, and finally the heart. The Muslim Testimony of Faith, that “there is no deity save God,” is at once the essence and the highest principle of Islam. This book is a demonstration, by one of the greatest recipients of the Prophet’s heritage of knowledge, of how the whole spectrum of Islamic thought and worship unfolds naturally from these few words. |

This volume contains two concise treatises of the venerable Imam al-Haddad. The first treatise, Mutual Reminding, distills the ethic and content of offering good counsel to one another. The chief elements of counsel, says the Imam, are taqwa (an active fear and consciousness of God) and detachment from the material world. These elements connect well with the topic of the second treatise, Good Manners, which discusses the manners recommended of the spiritual wayfarer as he or she takes the path to spiritual felicity. |
From the Foreword of Sh. Nuh Ha Mim Keller: |
The Heirs of the Prophet is an extraordinary book representing one of the many streams of traditional Islamic scholarship. In addition to huge multi-volume compendiums, many scholars also composed shorter treatises that focused, for example, on one particular hadith. This volume is such a work. Imam Ibn Rajab, who is considered one of the foremost authorities of Prophetic tradition (hadith) of his day, wrote this deeply inspiring and ever-relevant commentary on one hadith of the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) in which he said, "The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets." Ibn Rajab was able to bring together the ethics, authentic stories, and penetrating insights that relate to the noble enterprise of true learning. |

Translation by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf |
Call it what you may but don't get caught up on the names, because it's the reality that matters. This mesmerizing lecture is rooted in the famous Hadith of Gabriel (Jibril) in which the Messenger of God clearly establishes the status and definition of Ihsan. The science of Ihsan is commonly referred to as Sufism (ilm al-Ihsan), which is a highly codified science amongst the praiseworthy sciences. An entity is deemed lofty by the number of names attributed to it; Sufism has over 2000, with its core definition being genuine preoccupation (sidq al-tawajjuh) with the Divine. A true Sufi has no other concern, no other love, no other preoccupation except the Divine, Allah tabaraka wa ta'ala. This is all because the Sufi is treading the path of al-Mustafa (the chosen one), whose entire essence was dedicated to the Divine. By virtue of this blessed science, our mundane acts in this world gain nobility in the next and become means for proximity to our Lord. In this recording, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus concisely summarizes the science of Sufism; linguistically, historically, and pragmatically - and the role it has within the lives of believers. His insights and examples open the flood gates of Allah's mercy, leading to a crystal clear understanding and deeper appreciation of this core Islamic Science. |
There are several sunnahs of the Prophet peace be upon him that we, as a community, often neglect. The Prophet peace be upon him was reported to have said, "Anyone who brings one of my sunnahs to life, it is as if he has brought me back to life." Once again with incredible insight and wisdom, Shaykh Hamza delivers a moving talk where he compares Islam to the corporate model. He refers to Islam as a brand name, and asserts the idea of human beings "shopping" for a religion and seeking the most attractive brand. |
This brilliant narration of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was presented by Hamza Yusuf in a twelve week course based on the book, 'Muhammad' by Martin Lings. It is unrivaled in its analysis of the Prophet's life, making his amazing persona come alive. The focus of the narration is the Prophet's relationship with Allah through the Qur'an. Listeners learn verses in the order they were revealed to show how they impacted the young Muslim nation. |

Is a Clash of Civilizations Inevitable? Perhaps the most pressing question facing the US today is, what is our relationship with the Islamic world going to be? Can we work together to harmonize our traditions andvalues, or are we destined for a "clash of civilizations" |
A first time comprehensive album presenting the marvellous collection of Sacred Relics The collection includes more than 600 invaluable belongings of prophets such as Abraham, Moses and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the Prophet's Companions, as well as a number of Muslim saints. Excavated from the most restricted rooms of the palace, the entire selection is compiled here for the first time, including those that are not on exhibit for daily visits. The Topkapi Palace houses many items and relics collected and donated over a large period in history. Many relics of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were brought to the palace by Yavuz Sultan Selim I, upon the conquest of Egypt in 1517. During the First World War, a decision was made t o evacuate the cities of Makkah and Madina. To prevent thier damage or loss, the gifts which had been sent from Istanbul to Makkah for centuries, as well as some of the sacred relics, were brought to the Topkapi Palace, Istanbul. The Sacred Trusts captures and contains these items and relics in thier full glory combined with a fascinating history. 350 pp. Hardback |
In this special session, the esteemed scholar Shaykh Abdallah Bin Biyyah examines the famous hadith narrated by our Mother Aisha may Allah be pleased with her who responds to the question regarding the character of the Prophet peace be upon him by stating, "His character was the Qur'an." Utilizing many historical examples, Shaykh Abdallah highlights the magnanimity, selflessness, compassion, and countless other noble virtues of our beloved Prophet peace be upon him. This lecture is essential for anyone who aspires to internalize and embody the final revelation of God to all of humanity as well as grow in love of the one to whom it was revealed. |
In this lecture, Hamza Yusuf explains the spiritual meanings of the Hajj ritual. He discusses the struggles involved in the journey, why we worship God, the importance of the Day of Arafat, circumambulating the House of God, and other spiritual and physical aspects of the Journey. In this special, three-part lecture series, Imam Zaid focuses on providing essential advice for Muslims striving to hold strong to their faith in today’s context. Each individual lecture provides practical guidance and insights in light of the unique dynamics and diverse challenges facing Muslim men, women, and youth in modern society. Drawing from a number of sources, including the Qur’an, hadith, sayings of the great scholars, and even the U.S. Army Survival Guide, Imam Zaid emphasizes the importance of sincere commitment to being a Muslim, personal and spiritual development, and understanding the dynamics of our time. LECTURE ONE: |
In light of the tragic and violent events of recent years, and in light of modernity itself, Muslims in the West face difficult challenges, not the least of which is to promote a clear understanding of Islam, its historicity and its traditions. But we cannot be the ambassadors of our religion if we ourselves do not have a deeper understanding of it. This seminar was designed to provide Muslims with a better grounding in the Islamic tradition as well as a practical guide for responding to the challenges and criticisms of Islam in the modern age. SESSION ONE - Yahya Rhodus: |
In this series of four lectures, Imam Zaid and Ustadh Abdullah focus on the foundational Muslim teachings by examining the core concepts of Islam, Iman, and Ihsan and linking these fundamentals with their noble and lofty objectives. Recorded at a 2006 Zaytuna Minara program in Brooklyn, N.Y., this series provides, in a practical fashion, essential Islamic knowledge and includes an extensive question and answer session.
SESSION ONE: |
This special selection from Zaytuna’s 2005 “Ethnic Jihad” Minara program looks at how Muslims can honor and fulfill the spiritual and cultural legacy they have inherited. Imam Zaid highlights the importance of maintaining families, cultivating spirituality, and leveraging the blessings and opportunities of our time. CD 1 |

Many people have long held the erroneous notion that men are better than women. In Men & Women, Hamza Yusuf makes clear the positions and roles of men and women in society according to the Quran and Sunnah and sheds much-needed light on several often misunderstood Quranic verses and hadiths concerning the relationship between the two. |
Some decades ago, Albert Einstein noticed that, since the day the atom was split and its power unleashed, the whole world had changed except for one thing: the way we think. And he advised that if we want to ensure peace and the survival of mankind in the face of this new unleashing of power, we must learn to "think anew." It was these words that Hamza Yusuf Hanson evoked at Bristol University in Bristol, England in front of an audience of several hundred people, including Lords and Ladies, University professors, and students. |
The Prophet Muhammed, upon him be peace, was someone who went through unparalleled hardship, and yet he never allowed any difficulties to perturb him. In one very powerful and condensed session, Hamza Yusuf explains why. Commenting on the treatise of the seventh century scholar Izz ibn Abdus-Salam, he reveals 17 benefits of tribulations for those who would see them. Not only will this lecture completely transform your outlook on calamities, but it will also leave you in total awe of Allahs magnanimity and infinite mercy. |
On the anniversary of the Miraj, Hamza Yusuf gave a commentary on Sidi Ahmed Zarruq’s “advice” to the one who yearns nearness to his Lord. Topics such as divine unity, morality, repentance, and the golden rule were discussed, and Hamza Yusuf reminded us of the qualities of good character that are required to travel swiftly on the path of Islam. This is a timeless lecture of practical spiritual guidance, which the seeker of knowledge will never tire of listening. |

One of the greatest problems confronting modern Muslims is our inability to tolerate each other, let alone others. Our tradition has a rich science known as "the courtesies of differences and the etiquette of discussion." In this edifying talk, The Etiquette of Disagreement, one of the greatest scholars today, Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah, illuminates the essential aspects of this subject. |
“Our challenge as Muslims is to determine how best we can revive the ability for Islam to work with the great challenges of our time, the great transformations of our time, using the past as our compass. We must recognize that we are in the present, on a journey into the future, and the past is our North Star. We must use the principles of the past and derive strength from our past, but we must also reconcile with the fact that we are modern people.” |

Why do we get angry? What is the cure to our anger? Shaykh Muhammad al Yaqoubi provides an analysis of anger - its causes and effects, and makes a comparison between anger management in Western societies and the cure for it in Islam. |
Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi discusses the Prophet's life from his early childhood raised in a pagan society; as a business man conducting work in a lawless city; as a caller to Allah against all odds; and finally as an immigrant living the remainder of his life away from his native city. Shaykh Muhammad remarkably draws parallels between the difficulties he endured and what we who have immigrated to the West continue to face. |
This amazing lecture was given in San Jose, CA - USA. Shaykh Muhammad cover a very important issue, which is the station of our beloved Prophet (pbuh). He also talks about a very critical point, which is successful Dawa. He argues that the reason why our Dawa is not successful in the West is because we have left the Prophet (pubh) out of our Dawa equation. This talk is a must for anyone who really want to know the station of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and find strategies on how to speak to people of other faith. |

During the Deen Intensive Rihla in Abiquiu, New Mexico, students studied the fortieth book of Imam al-Ghazali's magnum opus, the Revival of the Religious Sciences with the translator of the text, and Ghazali expert Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (Dr. T.J. Winter). In this live classroom recording, Shaykh Abdal Hakim's illuminating and penetrating commentary is preserved and made accessible for students everywhere. The depth of Imam al-Ghazali's work and the gravity of the subject itself provide spiritual insights and a stark reminder for those who wish to reflect and ponder on humanity's unified inevitable destiny. |
As a scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Mazrui attempted to be a bridge between Islam and modernity. He argued that while Christianity became the vanguard of progress when it became more secular and less Christian, Islam was the vanguard of progress when it was more Islamic and less secular. According to Shaykh Al-Amin, progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment. Shaykh Al-Amin's choice of these favored sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) in The Content of Character -- translated and introduced here by the well-known American scholar Hamza Yusuf--was influenced by his effort to be a bridge--builder, especially between the values of tradition and the norms of modernity, between the wisdom of religion and the compassion of humanity. |
A young Indian villager, Omar Ghazi, is plunged into the independence and partition of India and Pakistan in the greatest mass exodus of the 20th century. Once he reaches Pakistan, he finds out that the struggle against injustice is not over as he is about to face an oppressive feudal landlord. |
"My advice to you, O Possessor of virtue and courtesy: if you desire to reside in an exalted place amongst the ranks of people, a place where you are high and exalted of virtue and courtesy is..." Thus opens the poem of the great scholar, Ibn al Haddad as translated and commented upon by Hamza Yusuf. Though short, this poem of council contains an immense amount of wisdom and is similar to the study of the Purification of the Heart. Shaykh Ibn al Haddad gives the seeker of knowledge the keys to both success in this world and success in the next world. Hamza Yusuf's commentary contains his usual style of putting the obvious before us in a way we will never forget. He reminds us of such things as, "Islam is the only religion where you will find a king at the door of beggars asking for their prayers." This is an inspiring talk that will help us to establish our own priorities for this world and the next. |

Are you a good brother or sister to your fellow Muslims? The chances are more likely than not, you are in need of some improvement. If we are to build successful communities, we must be people who put the needs of our brothers and sisters before the "things," which so distract us all, i.e. work, etc. We cannot do this until we implement the teachings in these lectures and put the people in our lives, first. |
Islamic history has one of the most remarkable legacies of famous women in human history. This CD set is primarily biographical and focuses on a select number of prominent women in Islamic history from the Age of the Prophet until modern times in a wide variety of areas from scholarship, mysticism, and poetry to social patronage, war, and politics. It shows that the status of women in Islamic societies has never been uniform or monolithic but has shifted from place to place, from age to age, and from class to social class. The greatest disparity, however, has been between the norms of the Prophetic period and those of subsequent ages. Prophetic society lacked the rigid divisions of social space that became characteristic of many traditional Islamic societies, and, as a rule, Prophetic society was more open and less patriarchal, giving women greater freedom and allowing them a conspicuous role within the matrix of social and civic life. A second major shift in women's status occurred during the colonial, post-colonial, and modern periods, when the position of Muslim women often deteriorated markedly. Although the class focuses on the legacies of particular women, it will look at their lives as an index of a number of concrete theological and legal issues pertaining to gender and sexuality in Islamic Law and Muslim culture. This set is not intended for women alone or just for Muslims. |
This set will introduce parents to the perils and pitfalls of modern compulsory schooling in the hopes of awakening a desire in them and need to seek out alternative approaches to educating their children. For more information please visit: www.kinzaacademy.com |
